A rating-only review is a star score left on your Google Business Profile with no words attached. Someone taps one star, or two, and moves on. There is no complaint to read, no order to look up, and nothing you can reply to in any useful way.

It still counts. Google treats a silent rating exactly like a written one when it calculates your average, so three quiet one-stars on a profile with forty reviews will pull your score down further than one long, angry paragraph would. Businesses often notice the number slipping before they notice why.

This is also the easiest kind of review to fake. There is nothing to write, nothing that can be fact-checked, and nothing that gives the poster away. That is exactly why rating farms, annoyed competitors, and people who never walked through your door use them.

The flip side is that a blank rating leaves no defence either. When there is no text, the case for removal is built entirely on the account behind it: who they are, what else they have rated, when they posted, and whether they ever had anything to do with your business.

You can report a rating yourself, for free, and some business owners get results that way. It is worth knowing what the process actually involves before you decide.

1. Open your Business Profile. Search your business name while signed in as the owner, or go through the Business Profile Manager.
2. Find the rating in the reviews list. Star-only ratings appear alongside written ones, usually with just a name and a date.
3. Use the Reviews Management Tool. This is the owner tool, not the small public flag icon. It lets you attach context, which the public flag does not.
4. Pick the closest policy reason. Fake engagement, conflict of interest, or spam are the categories that fit most rating-only cases. Do not choose a reason that does not apply, because a wrong category is a fast rejection.
5. Wait, then check the status. Google reports back through the same tool. A first decision usually takes a few days.
6. Appeal if it is refused. The appeal is where most successful removals actually happen, because it is the stage where you can present the account evidence properly.

The sticking point is step four and step six. Reporting a blank rating with nothing more than "this is fake" gets refused almost every time, because Google has no reason to act on an assertion. The report has to show the pattern behind the account. That is the work we do.

A rejection on the first report is normal, and it is not the end of the case. For rating-only reviews it is more common than not, simply because there is no text for a reviewer to read and the default answer is to leave content in place.

• Re-read the refusal. The reason given tells us which policy Google assessed. If they checked the wrong one, we refile under the right clause.
• Strengthen the account evidence. More rating history, clearer timing overlap, or a documented link to a competitor or ex-employee.
• Add your own records. Booking systems, POS exports, or enquiry logs showing no matching customer around that date carry real weight.
• File the formal appeal. This goes to a different review queue with the full evidence pack attached.
• Escalate where it applies. If the rating is part of an extortion attempt or a coordinated attack, it goes down Google's legal removal pathway.

A rating with no text costs the same as one with a long complaint, even though it takes more digging on our side, because the account research replaces the text analysis. If you have several ratings from the same attack, each one that comes off is billed separately.
